Optician Eyes up a Year of Audiology

A Macclesfield optician has marked one year of providing expert care to thousands of pairs of ears, with a day filled with the sound of laughter and barking.

Coinciding with World Hearing Day (3 March), Specsavers in the Grosvenor Centre celebrated delivering 12 months of audiology services to the local community – including hearing tests, hearing aid fitting and ear wax removal – with a family fun day to help raise much-needed funds for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

Volunteers from the charity, which trains puppies to alert people who are deaf to the important and lifesaving sounds that they might otherwise miss – such as a smoke alarm, alarm clock or even a baby crying – greeted customers with super-intelligent pup, Lexie.

Customers also enjoyed free hearing screening, the chance to win prizes with a ‘spin the wheel’, free goody bags, cupcakes, and selfies with a walking, talking giant ear.

The store will continue to support Hearing Dogs for the Deaf for the remainder of the month by donating £1 for every hearing test carried out in March.

Laura Deakin, Specsavers audiology director, says:

“We’re delighted to be marking such an important milestone, which couldn’t have been achieved without the support of our wonderful customers.”

“We’re a store full of dog lovers, so we jumped at the chance to celebrate the occasion with volunteers from the charity and adorable pup Lexie, whilst raising funds for such a worthy cause.”

“We’ve got some great ideas in the pipeline to continue our support for the charity, all I can say at this stage is that it’s going involve some serious grit and determination from the team!”

The audiology team conduct a series of tests to determine whether a customer has hearing loss, and if so, guide them through the process of selecting the right hearing aids for their specific needs. Ear wax removal is also available for private customers.

Specsavers, which also offers a Home Visits service for those unable to visit one of its 1,000 locally owned stores, provides a range of eye care services that not only help to maintain eye health and vision, but also help detect broader health issues.
